[OOC] Background Information

Name: Ozraeya (“Oz”) of the Strig
Age: 19
DOB: 12/21

Appearance:
Disguised/Courier | Wings
5’7”, tanned skin, dark brown hair with bangs framing her face and a long ponytail, owl-like eyes (black, yellow), tuffs of feathers on the top of her head that look like horns that she keeps covered with bandannas and hats. A magical tattoo on her back keeps her wings suppressed until she releases them, so she often wears open backed shirts under her outer shirts/coats.

Basics:
Ozraeya is the Child of Darkness, chosen by the Hands of Night and Shadow (the cult she was raised in), to protect the Dark Age by killing the Child of Light before she can fulfill her mission to bring back the Light Age and send the Darkness back to the shadows. This mission would culminate in her giving up her own life after killing the Chosen One to ensure the Dark Age would continue for another hundred years, just as her ancestor Amra before her gave up her life to ensure the Chosen One of The Dark could bring about the Dark Age hundreds of years ago. But Oz doesn’t want to die, and is actually protected from the dark magic she uses by the Soaring Blue, The Color that favors the sky and those that respect it. Eventually after a couple run-ins with the Princess of Light and her band, she finds out the truth. Amra died not knowing what her Princely charge’s true intentions were and never would have protected him had she known he was the Chosen One of Darkness. Oz chooses to defect from the cult and The Dark, working with the Chosen One of Light, Ellie, who is hiding out as a human and also running a courier service while training to bring back the Light Age.

Backstory:
For hundreds of years, animal people were discriminated against and persecuted during the Light Age. They were seen as inferior and as more primal than humans, often mistreated when living within certain human societies. That is why some animal people sided with the Hands of Night and Shadow, the cult most devoted to the Chosen One of Darkness and his mission to bring about the Dark Age, in hopes of gaining more power and authority outside of their small regions and reservations. In hopes of finding “good” humans who would respect them and see their worth.

This did happen in some ways. There was no “human this” or “beastman that” when the world is falling apart and everyone fears the Shadows that stalk amongst them. Human and Beastman alike had to come together to survive and thus many prejudices were set aside and acceptance and understanding grew. Of course, there is still some stigma and mystery, as many animal people still live within their secluded regions and communities, but now it’s out of caution and safety’s sake to protect themselves in fortified areas best suited to their people.

The animal people who chose the side of Darkness are not all so lucky. The cult continues to push the “beliefs” of ages long gone, that most humans will turn on the animal people as soon as it is convenient for them. That only the humans who chose to accept the Hands of Darkness truly understand how equal humans and beastmen are. And those beastmen who often fall under the protection of The Colors lost that protection and were slowly corrupted more and more by the Darkness they swore their loyalty to.

Ozraeya comes from two sides of this. Her mother is a human, a descendant of The Legendary Knight Amra who protected the Prince of Darkness and gave her life to ensure he could fulfill his mission and destiny to bring about the Dark Age. Nothing they had would be without Amra’s loyalty and sacrifice. They even take on the title of Knightmares in her honor.

Her father is of the Aves. The bird people who were often isolated from humans to protect their nests and eggs that could be harmed or stolen. Only two hundred years after some of the Aves tribes swore themselves to Darkness, most of them have lost the ability to fly without unnatural means. The Strig were one of those tribes. The Soaring Blue, The Color that patrons the sky and wind and those that respect them, cut off those tribes and as the years have gone by they have become more Darkness than Aves. It is rare for them to even be born with wings anymore. This is their sacrifice. Their proof of their loyalty to the Darkness that gave them all they have and brought them in when humans rejected and threatened them.

But Ozraeya was born with wings.

Not that she knows this. She believes she was gifted the wings by The Dark from the tattoo on her back, which is her connection to it and how she accesses Dark Magic. She doesn’t know just yet that the tattoo is both her connection to The Dark and the attempted suppression of her connection to The Soaring Blue. True Wings have become a sign of The Soaring Blue and thus are to be rejected for their false promises. You cannot trust The Colors. Only The Dark will show you truth and provide what you need when you need it. So when she believes she is “activating” the tattoo to give her wings, and it hurts to do so (as all Dark Magic hurts to use), she is actually pushing through the tattoo to release her wings.

So from a very young age, Ozraeya has been trained as an assassin. Silent, deadly, skilled in Dark Magic (although not as corrupted by it as others around her, thanks to the Soaring Blue’s protection), which hurts her to use every time. But she must fulfill her destiny, she is told. As her ancestor Knight Amra before her, it is Ozraeya’s duty to ensure the Dark Age prospers. She must kill the Child of Light before they perform the ritual to send the Darkness out and bring back the Light Age. And in killing the Child of Light, she must then sacrifice her own life, performing the ritual that will ensure the Dark Age prospers for another hundred years.

Except Ozraeya doesn’t want to die. She really, really doesn’t. For years she was ashamed by this, thinking herself disloyal and a false Chosen One because she was secretly so against the destiny meant for her. Killing the Chosen of Light was expected, but why must she die in the process? Why couldn’t she live to enjoy the world she would help protect? Was it truly her destiny to die?

But this was her duty and if she failed, both sides of her family would be disgraced. She would be shaming her ancestor Amra’s memory and the sacrifices of her Aves tribe. She didn’t know if dying or failure terrified her more. So when it was time, she went out to perform her duty as expected of her.

She never expected Ellie, though.

The first time they met face-to-face was actually an accident. She was getting supplies in a village and stumbled upon a girl in a large hat doing deliveries. A package was stolen and Ozraeya easily halted the thief after they slammed into her. The package was returned and Ellie offered her a job. Of course she turned her down, but it wasn’t long after that she realized exactly who it was she had spoken to. That she had just been in front of the Light’s Chosen and not struck as she should have. She tried to complete her mission and kill the Light’s Chosen One, but each time she failed. She became desperate, erratic and strained but when confronted with Ellie herself, she couldn’t do it. She couldn’t take her life. It wasn’t about not wanting to die herself anymore, she just couldn’t kill Ellie. She didn’t know what to think about why she couldn’t do this.

Or what to think about the fact that her ancestor Amra would turn out to be a two hundred year old undead skeleton who hates everything that Oz has been raised to stand for. To learn that all of that is a lie.

And this all ends up with Oz taking on that job that had been offered so long ago and working with Ellie and her team to courier letters and packages back and forth between the cities and villages. She didn’t decide immediately that she would help them try to stop the Darkness. It felt like too much of a betrayal even after everything else she had done. But she stays and she learns. She begins to see the world in a whole different way.

Personality:
Intense at times, very focused on Doing Things Right The First Time. Someone who can overthink things. She has a very sarcastic sense of humor. A pessimist. Hates liars and deception, although she’s totally cool with lying herself as she will justify it’s For A Good Reason. Has a lot of trouble expressing her feelings in a serious way and tends to be sarcastic or deflect instead. Has a deep-seated need to be told she’s doing the right thing and that someone believes in her. Loves flying. There is no better time for her than being able to take to the sky and feel the wind and touch the clouds. For all that she was raised in Darkness, Oz has always been drawn to the sky. It hurts her every time she does it, but the pain is worth the freedom and sense of belonging she feels when she’s in the air. She just limits her flying time as the longer her wings are out the worse the pain becomes.

She has issues with physical affection as her parents and the others of the cult never gave her any, so when people speak kindly to her or try to touch her, she often dodges the situation or finds a way to misdirect them. She doesn’t like people coming at her from behind and really does not like people trying to touch her without permission, except that physical affection is a thing with this group so she’s been learning to prepare herself. Hugs aren’t bad she’s just…inexperienced, and she hates that. She’s treating it like training and you know maybe that’s not the healthiest way to handle it, but it’s what works for her.

Abilities:
Ozraeya is trained in Dark Magic and that takes a toll on the user no matter what, although she has been mostly shielded from the corruption of the magic due to her protection by The Soaring Blue. She spills some of her own blood to access The Dark through the tattoo on her back, but using the spells cause her pain and can leave her suffering from massive migraines, eye weakness, and even nosebleeds from the pressure. She has two main spells that she uses. One is a masking spell that camouflages her so that the Shadow Clones do not see her. They essentially assume she, and whoever else she uses the spell on, is one of their own. This is a limited spell that cannot be used for an extended amount of time or she collapse from the strain of it. The second spell she uses often is a scrying spell. She can use it to seek out anyone much like following a homing beacon, but using it too long and she could go blind. If she only uses it for a short amount of time, her eyesight recovers, even if she may have some sensitivity to light for a couple hours (or days). She mostly uses than one at night. The more magic she uses, the more the tattoo will spread until it consumes her entirely, but The Soaring Blue had slowed her being corrupted by it.

Oz also was born with wings and can fly, but her wings have been suppressed. She assumes the tattoo on her back gives her the power of flight as it does all her Dark Magic, as that is what she was raised to believe her whole life. She doesn’t let anyone close enough to study it, so she doesn’t yet know the truth about it and the fact it actually suppresses her wings instead to try and obscure her bond with The Soaring Blue.
